The former head of the NHS in England, Sir David Nicholson, has claimed that the fundamental financial problems facing the NHS are being ignored by political leaders in the election campaign in favour of discussions around expanding healthcare services.

NHS England has published its business plan for 2015/16 which sets out ten priorities to improve quality and access to services for patients, drive better value for money and build the foundations for the future health and care system.

In a major new initiative designed to tackle the challenges set out in the Five Year Forward View, NHS England has announced 29 ‘vanguard’ sites across England that will take the lead in transforming standards of patient care.
From April 2015, the vanguards – which involve nurses, doctors and other health and social care staff – will redesign care in their areas and unite home care, mental health and community nursing, GP services and hospitals for the first time since 1948.
A threat of industrial action by NHS staff members was ended today following an agreement by unions to accept a pay proposal that was originally made by the Government in January.
