Mitie Secures Major Contract from NHS Property Services

A major facilities management company has secured a major contract worth more than £100 million from NHS Property Services.

Mitie will offer facilities management services of mechanical and electrical and building fabric at locations across England.

31 lots had gone up for auction, and the Bristol-based business has secured 25 of these at the time of writing.

A three-year contract has been agreed with NHS Property Services, and Mitie also has the option of extending the contract for a two-year period.

The overall value of the contract is in excess of £100 million, and its award follows an extensive procurement procedure.

A nine-month rationalisation process of facilities management services across the entire NHS Property Services estate was undertaken ahead of the appointment of Mitie.

Commenting on the new contract, Ruby McGregor-Smith, Mitie’s chief executive, was extremely pleased to have secured this lucrative position.

“We are very pleased to have been awarded this landmark contract. We are looking forward to working in partnership with NHS Property Services in the years ahead to improve the efficiency of the facilities management services provided to their wide range of buildings across England.”

Dennis Markey, chief operating officer at NHS Property Services, was also pleased with the agreement with Mitie over these key management facilities.

“This is a fantastic achievement for our FM teams and marks a significant cost saving for the NHS. By reducing the number of contractors we employ and setting a standard service specification, this process is driving efficiencies for the NHS, while making it easier to manage and control contracts. It has already saved millions for the taxpayer which will have an immediate impact on the quality of patient care.”

Mitie is a strategic outsourcing and energy services company, initially founded in 1987.

It provides infrastructure consultancy, facilities management, property management, energy and healthcare services.

The company has more than 200 smaller offices throughout the UK and Ireland, aside from its Bristol headquarters.

It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.

NHS Property Services is a limited company owned by the Department of Health (DoH) in the United Kingdom that took over the ownership of around 3,600 National Health Service (NHS) facilities in April 2013.

Following the Health and Social Care Act 2012, strategic health authorities (SHAs) and primary care trusts (PCTs) in England were abolished and replaced with GP=led commissioning consortia in April 2013.

All properties owned by the SHAs and PCTs not passed to the commissioning groups were transferred to NHS Property Services. The company now manages, maintains and develops the properties on behalf of the DoH.

NHS Property Services is now responsible for 10% of the NHS estate in total.
